Women's Volleyball Concludes Play at Scranton Invitational

SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior Sam Curran recorded 31 digs and was named the tournament's most outstanding player as the Wentworth women's volleyball team completed play at the Scranton Invitational by splitting a pair of matches. The Leopards defeated Bard, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-12), before falling to La Roche, 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 23-25, 16-25), to finish sixth at the two-day event.

In the win over Bard, the Black & Gold took control early as Wentworth hit .423 in the opening set and .355 for the match, which forcing Bard to hit for a negative attack percentage in all three sets and -.074 for the match.

A balanced attack paced Wentworth as freshman Sydney Meyers (Arnold, Md.) and sophomore Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) had seven kills apiece and junior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) had six kills. Nihan also hit .700, not making an error on 10 swings. Sophomore Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) served four aces, Curran and Bailey had nine and seven digs, respectively, and senior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 17 assists. Freshman Kayla Gendreau (Hudson, N.H.) served three aces.

Wentworth would hit .009 in the loss to La Roche as the Leopards took the opening set before the Red Hawks took the next three to take the win. In two of those three sets the Leopards had a negative attack percentage, including hitting -.192 in the third set. Bailey had 12 kills and 15 digs, while Meyers had seven kills and 13 digs. Freshman Catelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) had three aces and 11 digs, and Hunton had 18 assists and dozen digs. Nihan and sophomore Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) had two blocks apiece.

Standing at 2-2, the Leopards travel to Mount Ida on Saturday for a tri-match against the Mustangs and Daniel Webster.
