Women’s Volleyball Comes Up Short versus Stevens
Leopards open Stevens' Tournament falling in four sets to hosts; Emma Sanders leads offense with 14 kills

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Emma Sanders (14 kills, 7 digs) and Kate McLane (12, 8) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team (8-3) led the offensive prowess as the Leopards' comeback attempt against the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology (8-1) came up short in Friday afternoon's opener of the Stevens' Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- An ace by McLane gave the Leopards a 4-3 edge in the first set before kills from Sanders and Helen Barthe helped push the advantage to 11-7. Another finish by Sanders marked a 15-10 score before the Ducks battled back, eventually forcing a tie at 16 aside and later taking a 19-17 lead. Down 21-19, two kills from McLane evened the score, but the hosts carried on with four of the next five scores to take a 25-22 set.
- Stevens opened the second set on a 5-1 run before a Sanders' finish marked a 5-2 score. The Ducks continued the lead to 12-3 before a kill by McLane later marked a 15-7 deficit. A kill by Sanders marked an 18-9 score before the Ducks marched on to a 25-12 set win.
- Two finishes by McLane and another by Sanders got the Black & Gold out to a 4-1 advantage in the third frame before two kills by Kayla DeCastro continued the edge to 7-6. Another finish by DeCastro later marked a 15-12 lead before the Ducks later rallied for an 18-17 edge. A kill by McLane knotted the score at 19-all before the two teams swapped scores. Behind 25-24, a kill by Sanders followed by two Ducks' errors gave the Leopards a 27-25 set win.
- Stevens set out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set just before stretching their lead to 13-4. Two aces by Kinsey Lutz helped cut the deficit to 13-7 before a kill by Riley Schoonmaker marked a 16-9 deficit. The Ducks fended off the Leopards' last chance try, taking a 25-14 set win.
NOTABLE:
- Despite the loss, Olivia Vaughn surpassed 1,000 career assists, the seventh Leopard all-time to accomplish the feat.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the second-ever meeting between the two teams.

- The Leopards stay in Hoboken and play William Smith (11:00 a.m.) and Montclair State (4:00 p.m.) tomorrow at Stevens.
