BEVERLY, Mass. – Hadley Helenbrook of the Endicott Gulls' women's volleyball team secured a program-record 36 kills on 60 swings as the Gulls rallied past the Wentworth Institute of Technology in four sets Tuesday night.
With the result of tonight's championship rematch from a season ago, the Leopards fall to 10-6 and 1-1 in conference play while the Gulls post a 9-5 (3-0 CNE) mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams traded scores to begin the first set before a finish by Emma Sanders marked a 4-3 edge. Endicott rallied, taking an 11-6 lead later on, before continuing the score to 14-8. Behind 16-13 later on, two kills from Helen Barthe and another by Sanders knotted the score at 16-all before the Gulls pulled away with a 20-18 lead. Errors for the Gulls and two kills by Riley Schoonmaker helped the Leopards to a 23-22 edge before errors ultimately decided a 25-23 set win for the Black & Gold.
- The two teams swapped scores to open the second set before the Gulls rattled off to a 13-5 lead. Endicott continued to outpace Wentworth, raising the score to 20-7, before a block and a kill by Schoonmaker capped a comeback attempt at 24-15, with the Gulls prevailing on the next match point.
- Endicott continued their pace into the third frame, pushing out to a 11-1 advantage before a kill by Kate McLane stopped the run. However, the Gulls continued their surge to 17-4 before a Barthe finish stopped the run. The Gulls ended the set on an 8-3 run to grab a 25-7 set win.
- The Gulls raced out to a 10-1 lead in the fourth set before kills from Sanders and Clairissa Taylor closed the gap at 10-5. Another kill by Taylor later marked a 15-11 deficit before a finish by Schoonmaker marked a 17-14 score. A kill by Taylor later on marked a 23-18 deficit, but the Gulls would hang on for a 25-18 set win.
