Leopards battle off Scots, 3-1; Emma Sanders leads with a 14 kill, 14 dig double-double

BOSTON, Mass. – Emma Sanders of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team (14-8, 3-1 CNE) notched a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs as the Black & Gold fended off the Gordon Fighting Scots (7-10, 2-3 CNE) in a four-set thriller inside Tansey Gym Wednesday night.

Kate McLane (11 kills) and Clairissa Taylor (8) helped on offense in conjunction with Olivia Vaughn's 40 assists while Amanda Zweifler anchored defensively with 22 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sanders marked a 6-3 lead for the Leopards in the first frame with a finish before kills by Sanders, Riley Schoonmaker, and Helen Barthe pushed the advantage to 10-4. Kills by McLane and Schoonmaker continued the score to 15-8 before the Scots fought back, 15-13. A finish by Taylor marked a 19-15 lead before two kills by Sanders and another by Barthe helped the Leopards claim a 25-18 set win.
  • After Gordon kicked out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, kills by McLane and Schoonmaker helped the Black & Gold take a 4-3 edge before a finish by Sanders later marked a 10-6 lead. A kill by McLane marked a 15-12 score before the Scots battled back to take a 19-18 edge. The two teams swapped scores before Gordon went on a 5-1 run to take a 25-21 set win.
  • A Sanders finish marked a 4-4 knot in the third frame before a block by Sanders and Schoonmaker marked a 9-9 score later on. A finish by Taylor marked a 15-11 lead before the Leopards rolled with 10 of the next 13 points, including four service aces, to grab a 25-13 set win.
  • Two kills apiece by McLane and Sanders marked a 5-3 lead to start the fourth frame before Gordon rallied to take a 7-5 edge. Three kills helped the Leopards claim an 11-7 lead before the Scots later took a 14-13 edge. From there, the Leopards went on an 11-4 run, featuring three kills from Taylor, to earn a 25-17 set win.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Wentworth has grabbed eight of the last nine matchups between the two teams.
