McLane, Sanders Guide Women's Volleyball over Suffolk
Kate McLane and Emma Sanders combine for 37 kills to help Leopards best Rams, 3-1
BOSTON, Mass. – A combined 37 kills split between Kate McLane (19, .545 hitting percentage) and Emma Sanders (18, .350) guided the Wentworth Institute of Technology to a 3-1 win over conference rival Suffolk in conference action Wednesday night.
With the win, the Black & Gold improve to 15-9 overall and 5-1 in Conference of New England play while the Rams fall to 21-5 overall (3-3 CNE). Wentworth has now won five of their last six matches, with tonight's triumph snapping Suffolk's seven-match win streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards set out to a 9-2 advantage in the opening frame with the help of finishes by McLane, Sanders, and Riley Schoonmaker. Another Sanders kill marked a 12-6 lead before two finishes from McLane and others from Sanders and Schoonmaker carried the score to 18-9. After a battle back from the Rams, including seven straight scores to close the gap to 22-20, a Sanders kill capped a 3-0 run to give the Leopards a 25-20 set win.
- The Black & Gold again got off to a commanding lead to open the second set, this time leading 8-1 off of three finishes by McLane. The Rams scorched back to tie the set at 10-all before later taking 14-12 and 17-14 leads. After pushing their lead to 21-19, a kill from Sanders helped the Black & Gold take a 22-21 edge. However, Suffolk later ended the set on a 4-0 run to take a 26-24 set win.
- Wentworth flew out to a 12-2 lead in the third set, helped with kills from McLane, Sanders, and Clairissa Taylor, before a pair of kills from McLane and Sanders later marked a 14-5 lead. The Leopards ended the set on an 11-0 run, featuring two kills from Helen Barthe, to claim a 25-5 set win.
- Four kills from McLane and two from Sanders pushed the Leopards out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth frame before a Sanders finish marked a 12-4 score. After a slew of Rams' errors, a McLane kill marked an 18-7 score before a kill apiece by Barthe, Taylor, and Sanders helped Wentworth hold off Suffolk for a 25-12 set win.
