Women’s Volleyball Stretches Past UNE
Leopards sweep Nor'Easters behind 26 combined kills from Kate McLane and Emma Sanders
BOSTON, Mass. – Led by a two-pronged attack on offense from Kate McLane (15 kills, .294 hitting percentage) and Emma Sanders (11, .476), the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team swept the University of New England Nor'Easters in Conference of New England action Wednesday night.
The Leopards head into their final match of the regular season with an overall mark of 16-10, including a 6-2 record in conference play. The Nor'Easters fall to 18-6 (4-4 CNE) ahead of their last regular season date.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth sparked out to a 5-3 lead in the opening set thanks to kills from McLane, Sanders, and Helen Barthe. After being tied 5-5, the Leopards rattled off seven straight and nine of the next 10 points, featuring finishes by Sanders and Riley Schoonmaker, to take a 15-6 advantage. The two teams swapped scores until five straight scores by Wentworth, featuring finishes from McLane, Sanders, and Clairissa Taylor, clinched a 25-14 set win.
- After the Nor'Easters cut the deficit to a 4-3 edge to start the second frame, the Leopards scored seven straight to push their lead to 10-3 before a Sanders' kill later marked a 13-8 score. The Black & Gold finished the set on a 12-6 run, including two kills apiece for Schoonmaker and McLane, to take another 25-14 set win.
- Two finishes from McLane kickstarted a 13-4 run for Wentworth to begin the third set before a kill by Schoonmaker marked a 14-6 lead. The Leopards scored nine of the next 12 points, being capped by three aces from McLane, to take a commanding 23-9 lead, before errors plagued the Nor'Easters and earned Wentworth a 25-12 set win.
NOTEWORTHY:
- With her 15 kills, McLane climbs into the top ten all-time total kills rankings, already compiling 566.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Black & Gold have won nine straight matchups against the Nor'Easters.
