SALEM, Mass. – Michael Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) scored the game-winner and Derek Crocker (Wakefield, Mass.) scored three times for Salem State University in its 6-5 victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards on Friday night. It was the first game of the season for the Vikings.

Salem State had several players contribute in the one-goal win. Genovese combined with Nick Lampson (Groton, Mass.), Crocker, and Casey Terreri (Warwick, R.I.) to generate all of Salem State's offense. Crocker turned in the hat-trick and Lampson and Terreri each had a goal and three assists. On the defensive side of the blue line, Sam Cannata (Bozeman, Mont.) made an unbelievable diving play in the third period to break up a centering pass in an odd man situation that kept the Vikings in contention.

Wentowrth received five goals from five different players in the loss. Craig Cardone (Westford, Mass.), Dylan Barbieri (Plainville, Mass.), Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.), Anthony Principato (Holmdel, N.J.) and Matthew Dozois (Manotick, Ont.) each found the back of the net. Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) also recorded three assists for the Leopards.

Senior goaltender James LaCour (Silver Springs, Md.) turned away 19 of 24 shots on goal to gain his first win of the season for Salem State (1-0). Leopard's net minder, Mike Jarboe, (Grosse Point Park, Mich.) saved 40 of 46 shots. Jarboe and Wentworth fall to 0-1-1 on the season.

Cardone kick started the offensive match up with a goal at 3:28 from Wentworth. The Vikings quickly rebounded with Lampson's power-play goal past Jarboe at 5:36 to even the score. The Vikings would enter the locker room with a 2-1 lead after a Lampson shot deflected off of Crocker's stick during a power play at 15:36.

The Leopards responded in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. Barbieri scored in the opening minutes of the second after taking a feed from Principato. Shaun Jameson and Principato followed up with power play goals at 25:35 and 37:51 respectively to enter the second intermission with a 4-2 lead.

The reigning Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Champions continued to fight back. Crocker chipped away at the lead at 40:02. Four goals were scored in the next three minutes of play. Crocker completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal at 50:18 to knot the game at four. At 51:35 Terreri put the Vikings ahead by goal after taking a feed from Lampson.

The Leopards were relentless as Dozois knotted the score twenty eight seconds later. However, Genovese put the Vikings ahead for good with a goal that beat Jarobe to his stick side to make the score 6-5 with 6:40 left in regulation.
