Leopards Tie Wesleyan, 1-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Anthony DePietto (Westbury, N.Y.) scored with 4:07 remaining in regulation as Wesleyan and Wentworth skated to a 1-all tie in a non-league matchup played at Matthews Arena.

An evenly played first period saw both teams with chances to break the ice first, but Leopard freshman netminder Chris Azzano (Oshawa, Ont.) and Cardinal sophomore goalie Glenn Stowell (Hadley, Mass.) were solid between the pipes, turning aside seven and 10 shots, respectively.

The visitors applied pressure in the second period and had three strong scoring chances, including one by junior forward Tom Salah (Gloucester, Mass.), which was turned aside by Azzano.  Wentworth had a chance to take a 1-0 lead with 1:51 left in the period when junior forward Forrest Ellis (Pembroke, N.H.) was tripped on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot.  However, his scoring attempt was thwarted by Stowell, keeping the game scoreless.  Wesleyan held a 15-10 shot advantage in the middle stanza.

Wentworth took a 1-0 lead at 2:36 of the first period on a goal by junior forward Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.), which was assisted by classmate Casey Shade (Anchorage, Alaska) and freshman forward Andrew Yarber (Livonia, Mich.).  The lead held until DePietto's marker, which came from senior defenseman Henry Coxe (Fanwood, N.J.) and sophomore defenseman Chris MacDonald (Hanover, Mass.).

The game remained a stalemate for the remainder of regulation, however both teams saw chances to take the lead stopped.  With 1:34 remaining, the Leopards were forced to kill off a five-minute penalty which carried over into the extra frame.

Wesleyan carried play throughout the overtime period, putting three shots on goal – including two on the power play – and having four shots blocked.  However, the Cardinals were unable to convert as the game ended at 1-all.

Azzano made 34 saves for the 2-3-2 Leopards, while Stowell turned aside 22 shots for the 2-1-1 Cardinals.  Wentworth hosts Nichols Wednesday at 7:00, while Wesleyan is at Babson on Friday.
