Wentworth Skates Past Salve Regina, 7-4

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Juniors Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) and Casey Shade (Anchorage, Alaska) each scored a pair of goals to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology to a 7-4 win over Salve Regina University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast men's ice hockey Thursday night at Portsmouth Abbey Arena.

Sophomore Anthony Principato (Holmdel, N.J.) added a goal and an assist for the Leopards, who improved to 7-7-4 (4-2-1 ECAC) on the season and 16-1-1 all-time against Salve Regina. Sophomore Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, Calif.) potted a pair of goals for the Seahawks, who also received three-point nights from senior captain Joe Colaianni (Monroe, N.Y.) and sophomore Mike Cenisio (Chadds Ford, Pa.).

The Leopards took leads of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2, only to see the Seahawks rally back to tie the game each time. The game entered the third period deadlocked at three when Shade's second goal of the night and sixth of the season put the Leopards in front 3:32 into the period. Junior Mike Paglino (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.) slid a pass to Shade at the left post, and his shot beat freshman J.C. Turegon (Sherbrooke, Quebec). Just over four minutes later, Principato took a pass from Jameson and beat Turgeon at 7:28 to put WIT in front 5-3.

With 12 minutes remaining in the third, Jameson and sophomore Jackson Spivey (Anchorage, Alaska) were sent off for elbowing and cross-checking, respectively, giving the Seahawks a 5-on-3 advantage for two minutes. Salve Regina cashed in early as senior Brett Pimental (East Falmouth, Mass.) slid a pass to Cenisio in the left circle, and his pass through the slot hit Hutt's skate and trickled into the net. The goal cut the deficit to one at 5-4, but a pair of unassisted tallied by Jameson at 11:17 and 14:55 sealed the win for the Leopards.

Freshman Fred Gervasi (Missisauga, Ontario) staked the Leopards to a 1-0 lead 10:26 into the first period as his wrist shot from the slot beat Turgeon over his glove hand. Senior Bryan Russell (Essex Junction, Vt.) tied the game at one on a play started by Colaianni. The senior skated out of the left corner with the puck and took it to the front of the net. Freshman netminder Chris Azzano (Oshawa, Ontario) got his left skate on Colaianni's shot, but the puck was banged around in the crease and eventually put home by Russell for his sixth of the season at 13:28.

Wentworth grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second when Shade converted a pass from freshman Cory Lillie (East Hampton, N.Y.) into his fifth marker of the season with his team on the power play. Less than two minutes later, the Seahawks received a power play of their own and tied the game at two. Cenisio won an offensive zone draw to Colaianni, who slid a pass back to Hutt at the left point. The Curry College transfer fired a shot through the legs of Azzano for his fourth goal of the season and third in two games.

Freshman Cameron Gibson (Valencia, Calif.) gave WIT a 3-2 led when he directed a pass from classmate Matthew Dozois (Manotick, Ontario) past Turgeon at 17:46 of the period. Colaianni tied the game before the period ended with his fifth power-play marker of the season. Cenisio started the play with a pass to Russell, who slid a pass to Colaianni, who skated in on Azzano and wrapped the puck around his left pad and inside the right post at 18:59.

The Leopards outshot the Seahawks 42-35 on the evening and went 3-for-6 on the power play. Salve Regina potted three power-play goals of its own in seven opportunities with the extra skater.  The two teams combined for 62 minutes in penalties.

Salve Regina returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Nichols College at 2:45 p.m. Wentworth travels to Western New England for a 3:35 p.m. contest on Saturday.
