Softball Drops Two Games at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team mustered just four hits in two games as the Leopards were swept by Gordon, 9-0, and 10-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Friday afternoon.

Gordon took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a leadoff home run from Rachel Ryder and a two-run home run from Kara Pepper. Pepper's home run came after Skylar Bareford had reached on an error, scoring Marissa Meenan who had tripled.

The Fighting Scots added four runs in the third, with two runs scoring on passed balls to go along with an RBI single from Stephanie Zaloom and an RBI double from Ryder. An inning later the hosts rounded out the scoring when Zabloom reached on an error, scoring Pepper.

Wentworth's first nine batters were set down in order before sophomore Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) walked and junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) singled. However, three straight outs ended the threat.

Ryder and Pepper each had two hits and two RBI while Zabloom drove in a pair. Bareford picked up the win as she allowed one hit, walked two, and struck out three.

Curran took the loss for the Leopards as she pitched the first inning. Freshman Maya Bloom (Hopkinton, N.H.) pitched the final three innings.

Game two saw the Fighting Scots score a pair of unearned runs on a Pepper double in the first inning. An inning later Meenan hit a grand slam and Emily Burkhart was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the top of the third, Curran drew a two-out walk and stole second. On a single by junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.), Curran tried to score but was thrown out trying to score.

The fourth inning saw Gordon score a pair of unearned runs as Zaloom came around to score on an error and Ryder scored on a passed ball.

Ryder and Bareford had two hits each, Meenan drove in five runs, and Ryder and Pepper had two RBI each. Bareford earned the win as she allowed three hits and struck out three in four innings.

Wentworth recorded three hits in the game as Curran had a double and Glavin, and senior Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.) each had singles. Senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) and Bloom split pitching duties, with each going two innings.

The Leopards (4-18, 0-10) host defending CCC Champion Roger Williams on Saturday.
