Fast Start Paces UMass Boston Past Hockey in Semester-Ending Contest

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team – ranked sixth in both the latest USCHO.com and d3hockey.com national polls – found the back of the net six times in the opening stanza as the Beacons cruised to a 10-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest played at the Beacons Ice Arena.

Winners of three straight, UMass Boston improves to 9-1-1, while the Leopards dropped their eighth straight to end the semester at 3-9-1.

The hosts wasted little time getting on the board, scoring at 2:37 when senior Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored from junior Zach Lindsay (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and freshman Mike Thomson (Reading, Mass.). The lead lasted just 1:08 as freshmen Eric Grover (Biddeford, Maine) and Byron Carlisle (Orleans, Mass.) set up junior Kyle Lebrun (Bridgewater, Mass.).

UMass Boston responded by scoring five goals in a span of 15:01, Lindsay tallied what would be the game-winning goal at 4:32, senior Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals, and senior Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) and junior Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) each had one marker. The Beacons held a 20-9 shot advantage.

In the second period there was no scoring and the hosts had a 14-9 shot advantage.

The Beacons tacked on four goals in the third period with senior Derek Colucci (North Scituate, R.I.) scoring twice, Miller adding a goal and an assist, and senior Alex Dermchuk (Calgary, Alta.) also scoring.

Senor Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) made 24 saves for the Beacons. Freshman Matt Jenkins (Mount Pearl, N.L.) gave up four goals on nine shots in 8:32. Senior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 33 saves in 41:08, while sophomore Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.) made five saves on six shots in 10:20.

The 10 goals given up by Wentworth were the most the Leopards have allowed in a single game since giving up 10 in a 10-0 loss at Norwich on December 9, 2005.

UMass Boston will host Brockport State on January 2 as a part of the 51st Annual Codfish Bowl. Wentworth is idle until January 9 when the Black & Gold travels to Plymouth State.
