BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman attackman Cameron Signorelli (Albany, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder John Ricciardi (Duxbury, Mass.), and junior midfielder Kirby Sundquist (Concord, Mass.) each scored two goals to help pace the Roger Williams men's lacrosse team to an 11-6 win over Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Sweeney Field.
The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 6:54 left in the opening quarter on goals from Ricciardi, sophomore attackman John Nessa (Concord, Mass.), and Signorelli before the Leopards pulled within a pair on a sophomore midfielder Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) goal with 5:18 left. Signorelli gave Roger Williams a 4-1 lead with his second of the quarters, coming with 2:01 left.
Roger Williams made it a 5-1 game on a sophomore attackman Todd Carson (Pennington, N.J.) goal with 11:34 left in the second, which was followed by a senior midfielder Justin Connors (Richboro, Pa.) goal with 7:17 left to make it a 5-2 contest. The Hawks got goals from freshman attackman Michael Kemmy (Bristol, R.I.) and Sundquist to extend the lead to 7-2 before a junior attackman Mark Pappas (Worcester, Mass.) goal for the Leopards, which was assisted by Kipp, cut it to 7-3. With two seconds left in the half the Hawks pulled ahead 8-3 on a Ricciardi marker.
Wentworth scored the only two goals of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 8-5, as sophomore attackman Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) scored less than a minute apart from each other.
The game remained a three-goal contest until Roger Williams scored three times in less than four minutes to break the game open. Sundquist, junior attackman Drew Beck (South Salem, N.Y.), and senior midfielder Adam Vorwald (South Setaucket, N.Y.) scored for the Hawks at 6:04, 4:33, and 2:13, respectively. Kipp rounded out the scoring with a goal with 1:37 left.
Beck and Kemmy had a goal and an assist each for the Hawks, while sophomore midfielder Alan Williams (Bristol, R.I.) won 12 of 18 draws at the face-off X. Beck also had a game-high six ground balls.
Kipp finished with two goals and an assist while Connors, playing in his final collegiate game, had a goal and an assist.
Freshman Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) made 10 saves for the Hawks, while junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) had 18 for the Leopards. Roger Williams held advantages in shots (44-31) and ground balls (52-29).
Winners of three straight Roger Williams improves to 9-5 overall and finished second in the CCC with a 6-1 record. The Hawks earn a first-round bye in the upcoming CCC Tournament and will be idle until May 2. Wentworth, under first-year head coach Dan Russo, finishes 2-11 (0-7).
