Men's Soccer Pushes Past MIT
Leopards break a scoreless tie in the 67th minute to defeat the Engineers, 1-0
BOSTON, Mass. – Christopher Jimenez scored the game's lone goal and Adrian Sanchez posted his second straight shutout as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team edged MIT, 1-0, in non-conference action Wednesday night on Sweeney Field.
The Leopards improve to 3-2-2, winning their second straight game and running their unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2), while the Engineers, ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Region II Coaches Poll, fall to 4-3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth carried the early momentum with a pair of corner kicks in the five minutes of play and had both shot attempts off the set pieces go wide. In the seventh minute, Vinny Dentrone had a shot on net that was saved by Paolo Mangiafico.
- The 12th minute saw MIT with its first shot attempts, which was saved by Sanchez and the Engineers continued to apply pressure, blocking five shots in the first half. As time wound down, Sanchez made a save off a header from MIT's Canon Roberts.
- Each team had a shot on net in the first 13 minutes of the second half but were unable to break through.
- At the 66:58 mark, Jimenez scored his second tally of the season, taking a pass from Michael Liquori and firing a low shot from the right side that snuck inside the left post.
- MIT put a pair of shots on net in an attempt to tie the game, however, Sanchez stopped both. In the 88th minute, the Engineers had one last attempt that sailed wide of the mark.
- Sanchez made five saves in the win while Mangiafico made two saves for MIT. The Engineers had an 18-6 shot advantage, while Wentworth had the edge in corner, 5-3.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Tonight marked the 27th known meeting between the two teams.
