Softball Bats Fall Silent in Losses to Western New England

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Lauren Zambrano (Wallingford, Conn.) pitched a no-hitter in game one and freshman Heidi Grieger (Hyde Park, N.Y.) followed it up with a perfect game in the nightcap as the Western New England softball team swept Wentworth Institute of Technology, 8-0, and 17-0.

The Golden Bears scored two runs in the first, five in the second, and one in the third in the opener. Zambrano helped her cause with three hits, including a two-run home run, while junior Maria Francese (Hinsdale, Mass.) and sophomore Samantha Mulhern (Worcester, Mass.) had three and two hits, respectively. Zambrano struck out 10 batters to improve to 10-3.

Wentworth's lone baserunner of the game came in the second inning when sophomore Anna Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) drew a two-out walk. Freshman Kate Lee (Spruce Head, Maine) took the loss for the Black & Gold, allowing eight runs on 11 hits.

In the nightcap, Western New England scored once in the top of the first and added three-run innings in the second, third, and fourth innings before completing the day with a seven-run fifth inning. Sophomore Jocelyn Agnelli (Winchendon, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with five RBI, while sophomores Hannah Hill (Malden, Mass.) and Erica Mastropaolo (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and freshman Heather Fecteau (Biddeford, Maine) had two hits apiece. Grieger struck out five batters over five innings to improve to 1-1.

The Golden Bears (14-9, 6-2 CCC) host Wesleyan on Tuesday, while that same day, Wentworth (4-17, 0-10) also steps out of conference and travels to Wheelock.
