MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach with a pair of games on Thursday afternoon. The Leopards were defeated by SUNY Poly, 9-4, and fell, 3-1, to Hilbert.
SUNY Poly 9, Wentworth 4
Wentworth struck first, putting up three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Freshman Rebecca Wehrle (South Amboy, N.J.) led off with a walk and went to third on a double from junior Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.). Wehrle scored when junior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice and Berryman scored when Weymouth went to second on an error. Weymouth came into score on a junior Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.) RBI single.
SUNY Poly tied the game with a three-run bottom of the first inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly and a two-run single. The Wildcats added a single run on an RBI single in the second and would tack on two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
The Wildcats took a 9-3 lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs with two outs in the inning. A two-run double and RBI single provided the offense.
Wentworth made it a 9-4 game in the top of the seventh when Berryman, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a passed ball.
Wehrle and Willcutt had two hits apiece for the Leopards. Sophomore Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle for the Black & Gold.
Hilbert 3, Wentworth 1
Wehrle led off the game with a single and moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch. Sophomore Libby White (Pittsfield, Mass.) grounded out which moved Wehrle to third and she would score on an RBI single off the bat of Willcutt.
The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a ground out.
Hilbert took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on a groundout which followed a leadoff triple. Wentworth had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, however could not get the run home.
Weymouth had a pair of hits for the Leopards while sophomore Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits.
The Leopards open their spring season at Mass. Maritime on Thursday.
