BEVERLY, Mass. – Top Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contender Endicott College swept the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team on Tuesday afternoon at the Endicott Softball Complex.
Wentworth drops to 11-24 overall, and wraps up conference play at 3-15. Endicott improves to 28-4 this season and 16-2 against league opponents.
Game One – Endicott: 9 Wentworth: 1 (Five Innings)
The Gulls pushed all nine runs across in their first at-bats, including seven hits and two RBI from senior Emily Sharpe (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), and juniors Olivia Odermatt (Cheshire, Conn.), and Gina DiMilt (Princeton, N.J.). The Leopards got one back in the top of the fourth, as freshman Kayla DeMedeiros (So. Dartmouth, Mass.) roped a leadoff double, and moved over to third on a wild pitch. Junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) recorded the Leopards' lone RBI, and drove in Medeiros on a single to short. Sophomore Kacey Russo (East Walpole, Mass.) kept the bats popping for Wentworth, before Kelsey Gorski (Killingworth, Conn.) bumped over to third on a sacrifice bunt. Sharp defense from the Gulls recorded the third out, however, to keep the damage at one run, as the home team rolled to the 9-1 final.
Russo led the Leopards on the bats with a 2-for-2 performance, while DeMedeiros, sophomore Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) and senior Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) each recorded a hit in the deficit.
Junior Jamie Hopgood (Warwick, R.I.) went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Gulls, highlighted by two doubles, while Odermatt recorded two hits in three at bats. Lindsee Allienello (East Providence, R.I.), Sharpe, and Odermatt each swung into a double in the winning effort.
Wentworth freshman Alex Kielty (Middleboro, Mass.) suffered the loss with six earned runs, two walks, and four hits. DeMedeiros pitched four innings of relief and fanned two batters, while allowing two earned runs.
Junior Laura Somerville (Suffield, Conn.) pitched a complete game for the Gulls, and allowed six hits and one earned run with five K's.
Game Two – Endicott: 9 Wentworth: 0 (Five Innings)
Senior pitcher Mikaela Mallozzi (Shelton, Conn.) earned her third win in the circle for Endicott, and pitched all 5.0 innings with just four hits, zero earned runs, and two walks, while striking out five batters. Endicott was heavy on the bats in the nightcap, and recorded 13 overall, as the home team got its first run across in the bottom of the first. Allienello started with a leadoff double to left center, and came home on a Hopgood single through the gap.
The Gulls pushed four total runs across the third and fourth innings, led by an RBI apiece from freshman Adrianna Favreau (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Kayla Sheldon (Burlington, Mass.). Endicott secured the shortened contest in the bottom of the fifth, as the Allienello, DeMilt, and Hopgood trio each registered an RBI single.
Wentworth swung into four hits in the setback, led by senior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) on a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with a stolen base. Junior Emily Winter (Stratford, Conn.) and DiPilato each recorded a hit for the Leopards.
DeMedeiros suffered the loss on the hill, allowing eight runs – four earned -, 13 hits, and one walk.
Wentworth closes out the 2018 season tomorrow afternoon with a non-conference contest vs. Wheelock.
