Endicott Pulls Away from Women’s Volleyball in CNE Championship
Leopards battle Gulls but fall 3-0 in conference championship rematch; Kate McLane totals 15 kills, Amanda Zweifler leads match with 16 digs
BEVERLY, Mass. – In their second-straight appearance in the conference championship, the second-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team came up short to the top-seeded Endicott Gulls by a 3-0 final Saturday afternoon.
Wentworth's season comes to a close with an overall record of 18-11. Endicott captures their first title since 2022 and heads to the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament with a 22-7 mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Gulls got themselves out to a 5-1 lead in the opening frame before a finish by McLane kickstarted a small run for the Leopards, cutting the score to 5-4. The two teams traded points, with Endicott separating themselves with a 10-6 advantage before furthering the lead at 14-8 and later, 18-11. However, the Leopards went on a 6-0 run, featuring two kills from Emma Sanders, to cut the deficit to 18-17. The Gulls outpaced Wentworth to hold on for a 25-22 set win.
- Three finishes by McLane helped the Black & Gold out to a 6-2 advantage in the second set before the Gulls scored five-straight to take a 7-6 edge. The two teams swapped scores, with the Leopards taking a 16-13 lead later on a kill by Sanders. Two kills from Helen Barthe continued the lead to a 20-17 advantage before the Gulls clawed back, eventually taking a 24-23 edge. Errors later gave the Leopards a 26-25 edge in a back-and-forth affair before the Gulls rattled off three-straight points to take a 28-26 set.
- Wentworth again got out to an advantage to begin the third set, this time at 5-2 with a kill apiece by Sanders and McLane, before a finish by Barthe helped mark a 9-6 lead. Aces by Barthe and Amanda Zweifler helped continue the advantage to 14-11 until the Gulls went on a 7-1 run, grabbing an 18-15 lead. A finish by McLane cut the deficit to two, but Endicott carried their momentum into a 25-18 set win with a 7-3 run.
- McLane led the offensive attack with 15 kills, followed by Sanders and Barthe who had six and five, respectively. Olivia Vaughn dished out 28 assists while Zweifler anchored the defense with a match-high 16 digs.
