Baseball Battles Back to Split With Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – Freshman Nate Ladeira (New Bedford, Mass.) was one of four players to record two hits and he drove in three runs to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team earn a split with Salve Regina. The Leopards claimed the nightcap, 5-4, after falling in the opener, 10-2.

GAME ONE:  Salve Regina 10, Wentworth 2
Wentworth scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead. Senior Ross Golebiewski (Lyme, Conn.) led off with a single and went to second on a groundout by junior Devin Haberstumpf (Forest Hills, N.Y.). After a strikeout, Ladeira singled home Golebiewski, which was followed by freshman Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) doubled in Ladeira and moved McManus to third, however, a groundout ended the inning.

Salve Regina took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Tristan Dacey (Wyckoff, N.J.) had a two-run double, which scored junior Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) and senior Zach Smith (New Canaan, Conn.). Freshman Jack Betts (Narragansett, R.I.) and freshman Sean O'Malley (Darien, Conn.) followed with RBI singles. With two outs, Betts and O'Malley came around to score on a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Madden Ward (Clinton, Conn.).

The Seahawks upped their lead to 9-2 in the seventh inning as Smith hit a two-run double and Betts had an RBI single. An inning later, sophomore Anthony Cieszko (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) delivered an RBI single.

Junior Patrick Maybach (Saunderstown, R.I.) picked up the win (3-1) as he allowed two runs on three hits and struck out 11 batters in seven innings of work. Ward led al Seahawk batters with three hits.

Junior Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) suffered the loss (1-4) as he allowed six runs on nine hits in six innings. Freshman Matt Perconti (Hancock, Maine) pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three. Four different players had hits for the Leopards, including French and Madeira who also each drove in a run.

GAME TWO:  Wentworth 5, Salve Regina 4
The hosts scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning of the nightcap to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Colton Eremian (Boca Raton, Fla.) led off with a walk, went to second on a groundout, and stole third before Betts brought him home with an RBI single. A hit batter and an a single loaded the bases which allowed Cieszko to bring Betts home with a sacrifice fly.

Wentworth got on the board in the third inning as French made it 2-1 with his first home run of the season. The sixth inning saw the Black & Gold take a 4-2 lead, scoring three times in the frame – all with two outs. Golebiewski singled and went to second on a Haberstumpf single. Sophomore Kyle Litwin (Jacksonville, Fla.) reached on an error which drove in Golebiewski and moved Haberstumpf to second. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet and Laderia drove in two runs with a single.

The bottom of the seventh inning saw Salve Regina pull within a run as freshman Brett McAllister drove in Betts, who had led off the inning with a single. Wentworth got the run back in the top of the eighth inning when Ladeira drove in Haberstumpf who had led off the inning with a single and went to second on a Litwin sacrifice bunt. The Black & Gold loaded the bases with one out, however, a strikeout and a groundout prevented more runs from scoring.

Salve Regina pulled back within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Smith led off with a single and stole second base. After two outs were recorded, Betts drove him home. An inning later, the Seahawks had runners on first and second with one out, however, senior Ben Rexford (Lancaster, N.H.) got a fly out to end the game.

Senior Leo Coehlo (Marlborough, Mass.) picked up the win (2-2) as he allowed three runs on three hits and struck out three in seven innings. Rexford notched the save, allowing one run on four hits in two innings of work. In addition to Ladeira, French, Golebiewski, and Haberstumpf also had two hits.

Freshman Zach Lopez (New Canaan, Conn.) took the loss (0-1), allowing three runs on three hits in three innings of relief. Betts was 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Wentworth is at Mass. Maritime on Thursday night.
