Men's Tennis Falls to Nichols in TCCC Quarterfinals

POMFRET, Conn. – The top-seeded Nichols College men's tennis team dispatched eighth-seeded Wentworth, 6-2, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal Monday evening at the Pomfret School's indoor courts. Nichols improves to 15-4 overall and advances to the TCCC semifinals for the second consecutive season. Wentworth sees its season come to an end at 6-8 overall.

Nichols led, 2-1, after doubles play, getting points at the second and third flights. Wentworth's top tandem of Juan Rodriguez (Quito, Ecuador) and Joel Vastl (North Salem, N.H.) came away with an 8-3 victory after Nichols posted two wins. Isiah Prosper (Manchester, Conn.) and Daniel Young (Washington Depot, Conn.) were 8-1 winners at the second flight, while Eliot Wuhrmann (Fontainebleau, France) and David Drucker (Bellmore, N.Y.) posted an 8-2 victory at the third spot.

The Bison's Steve Carella (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was the first to finish on the singles side with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Thuan Nguyen (Randolph, Mass.) at the second flight. Young followed at the fourth flight with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tim Nguyen (Windsor, Conn.).

Rodriguez ran his perfect singles season to 17 matches with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Drucker at the top flight before Prosper clinched the match at the fifth spot, defeating Vastl, 6-0, 6-0. Wuhrmann finished simultaneously at the sixth flight with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Matt Levine (Brockton, Mass.). Both Wuhrmann and Prosper extended their singles win streaks against conference opponents to 11 matches.

Nichols will host fourth-seeded Endicott at 3 p.m. Wednesday for the semifinals at the Francis W. Robinson Courts. The Gulls were 5-4 winners over fifth-seeded Gordon earlier Monday afternoon
