BROCKTON, Mass. – Four different players recorded three hits, including freshman Julian Jaume (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who also drove in five runs as the Curry College baseball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 15-4, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Thursday night.
With the win the Colonels improve to 10-22-1 overall and 2-9-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 9-21-0 3-9-0).
Curry took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when senior Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled home junior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.), who had hit a one-out single. An error on the play allowed freshman Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) to score as well. The Colonels added three more in the second s, with the bases loaded, Keller hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.), Leonard delivered an RBI single, and senior Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch.
Wentworth pulled within a pair of runs (5-3) in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Jake Smith (Orange, Conn.) singled and went to second on an errant throw, junior Dan Mitchell (Avon, Mass.) drew a one-out walk, and freshman Nate Ladeira (Fall River, Mass.) walked with two outs to load the bases. Freshman Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) walked to bring in Smith and sophomore Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) hit a two-run single, plating Mitchell and Ladeira.
The Colonels got two runs back in the third inning, thanks to a two-run, two-out single from Jaume, and, an inning later, Curry broke the game open with an eight-run inning. In the fourth. Jaume had a three-run double and scored on an error, Jenkins had an RBI double, sophomore Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) had an RBI single, Duarte drew a bases-loaded walk, and Keller homered.
Freshman Matt Bishop (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) hit a one-out single in the fifth and went to second when senior Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) walked before coming home on a Smith RBI single.
Freshman Jack Needham (Raynham, Mass.) picked up the win (2-2), allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and struck out four in five innings of work.
Wentworth freshman Matt Perconti (Hancock, Maine) took the loss (2-4), allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out four in 2.2 innings of work. Smith finished the night 3-for-4 with an RBI while Bishop was 2-for-3.
The Leopards conclude the regular season Saturday at Roger Williams.
