DUDLEY, Mass. – Led by a goal and an assist from junior Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.), the Nichols College men's soccer team got its first The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory of the season with a 3-0 win over visiting Wentworth Tuesday afternoon. Nichols improves to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in TCCC games, while Wentworth evens up at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play after seeing its three-game win streak snapped.
The Leopards spotted the Bison an early one-goal lead when a defender headed in an airborne ball into the Wentworth net in the 21st minute. Capitanio added to it in the 32nd minute when he powered in a free kick from just outside the box. He then picked up the assist on Nichols' third goal in the 56th minute on a throw-in that Wentworth goalkeeper Brian Pearsall (Sanford, Maine) stopped but couldn't possess. Brian Ligawiec (Ware, Mass.) was there to head in the rebound.
Nichols goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton (No. Attleboro, Mass.) earned his third shutout of the season with six saves. Pearsall allowed all three goals while making two saves before giving way to John Longo (Needham, Mass.) in the 61st minute.
