UNE Pulls Away From Women's Lacrosse

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) scored three goals and assisted on three others to help pace the University of New England women's lacrosse team to a 22-5 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest Wednesday afternoon.

With the win the Nor'Easters snapped their two-game losing streak and improved to 3-5 (1-0) while the Leopards dropped their second straight to see their record even at 2-2 (0-2).

Senior Jessica Deeson (Sherman, Conn.) scored 31 seconds into the game to begin a string of six straight goals by UNE, with sophomore Brooke Kelleher (Exeter, N.H.) scoring three and senior Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) scoring a goal and assisting on two others. Junior Pam Mudge (Hooksett, N.H.) ended the run with a goal coming with 16:01 left.

The Nor'Easters scored the next four goals and took a 10-1 lead with 9:01 left in the half. However, the Leopards responded by scoring the next three as senior Alexandrea Banks (Ellington, Conn.) scored with 8:12 left and sophomore Molly Dufresne (Plaistow, N.H.) scored the next two to make it 10-4 with 5:52 left. UNE scored three times in the final 5:01 to take a 13-4 lead at the break.

UNE would score nine times in the second half to extend their run to 12-0 and would lead 22-4 with 4:35 left. Newsome scored three times during this stretch. Senior Heather Saroch (Arnold, Md.) ended the run with a goal with 29 seconds left, which snapped the 35:23 scoring drought.

Kelleher scored three times and sophomore Kimberley Gosselin (Concord, N.H.) added two goals and three assists in the win. Warren had four draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Dufresne scored twice for Wentworth while Banks won three draw controls. Senior Robyn Pacini (Stoneham, Mass.) had a game-high seven ground balls.

Junior Lauryn Huck (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) picked up the win, making two saves in the first 16:24. Freshman Maddy Ouellette (Jupiter, Fla.) made one save in 29:06, and junior Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) made two saves over the final 14:30.

Both teams are in action on Saturday as the Nor'Easters are at Western New England and the Leopards are at Curry.
