Late Goal Pushes WPI Past Women's Soccer

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior back Karina Larson (Storrs, Conn.) scored the game's lone goal, coming with 2:56 remaining in regulation, as the WPI women's soccer team edged Wentworth Institute of Technology, 1-0, in non-conference action Wednesday night.

With the win the Engineers snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 5-3 on the season while the Leopards fall to 3-4. Three of Wentworth's four losses have come by one goal.

WPI had an early advantage, putting four shots on net in the first 16 minutes, all of which were stopped by junior Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.). The Engineers had a 13-4 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes with eight of those 13 coming on target.

In the 80th minute, Fleming made a diving stop to keep it a scoreless game, however, Larson would end the stalemate in the 88th minute as she scored off a rebound when she took an initial shot after being set up off a corner kick play.

Junior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, Conn.) made five saves to pick up the win. Fleming made 13 saves in the loss. WPI had a 26-5 shot advantage and a 9-2 edge on corner kicks.
