Regis Rallies Past Women's Volleyball

WESTON, Mass. – Freshman Riley Schoonmaker (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded 10 kills as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell to Regis College, 3-1, in non-conference action Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the teams traded points to open the match, Wentworth took a 4-1 lead before Regis rolled off the next four points to take a 5-4 lead. The teams traded two-point leads and, with the score tied at 11-all, the Leopards used a 9-1 run taking a 20-12 lead when sophomore Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.) served an ace. The pride pulled to within five at 23-18 before Regis had back-to-back attack errors to give Wentworth a 25-18 win and a 1-0 lead.
  • Senior Riley Waggoner (Simi Valley) and sophomore Ashley Cao (Morrisville, N.C.) teamed up for a block to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead in the second set, however, Regis used a 7-1 run and took an 8-2 lead after a service ace. Using an 15-7 spurt, the Leopards took a 17-15 lead after a Waggoner kill. The Pride responded with 10 straight points, tying the match at 1-all with a 25-17 win.
  • The hosts opened the third set scoring six of the first seven points and took a 6-1 lead on a block. Four straight points, capped off by a kill from Waggoner, pulled Wentworth to within 6-5. Regis used an 11-6 spurt to extend its lead, taking a 17-11 lead before Wentworth responded with four of the next five points, which included two kills from Waggoner, making it 17-15. After the Pride opened a five-point lead at 21-16, Wentworth closed the gap to two (22-20) on a Cao service ace. However, Regis took a 2-1 lead with a 25-10 win in the set.
  • Wentworth scored the first three points of the fourth set but eventually found itself down, 11-7. Kills from Schoonmaker and Barthe pulled the Black & Gold to within two at 11-9 but a 9-3 Regis run gave the hosts a 20-12 lead. Wentworth scored the next four, coming within four at 20-16 on an attack error, however, the Pride closed out the match with five straight points.

THE SERIES:

  • Tonight was the 33rd meeting between the two teams. Regis leads, 22-11.
