Gordon Holds off Men's Basketball's Late Charge

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Garrisson Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) led three players in double figures as he scored 17 points to help the Gordon College men's basketball team defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 70-61, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Fighting Scots snap a two-game losing streak, improving to 13-10 overall and 10-6 in CCC play while the Leopards see their three-game win streak come to an end, falling to 11-12 (9-7).

Gordon scored first on a basket from senior Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.), however five straight Wentworth points made it 5-2 in the early going. The Fighting Scots took a 10-9 lead on a three pointer from junior Jake Hart (Allendale, N.J.) before an 8-2 Leopard run made it 17-12 with just under 12 minutes remaining.

The Fighting Scots responded with five straight points to make it 17-17 with 9:37 left in the half. However, Wentworth bounced back and used an 11-4 run to take a 28-21 lead on a three from junior Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.). Gordon would chip away at the lead and one of two free throws from Johnson with 38 seconds left in the half made it 32-31.

Knollmeyer opened the second half by hitting one of two free throws to make it 33-31, however the Fighting Scots outscored the Leopards 17-7 over a span of seven and a half minutes to take a 51-40 lead on a junior Jaren Yang (San Francisco, Calif.) three pointer. Gordon led by 11 two more times, including on a Duvivier jumper with 8:03 remaining.

Wentworth began to make a charge back, scoring eight straight points which was capped off by a transition three pointer from senior Dan DeVaux (Wethersfield, Conn.) with just under three minutes left. However, four straight Gordon points made it a seven-point game with 1:38 left and the Fighting Scots went 10-for-10 from the line down the stretch.

Yang finished with 15 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists while Hart had 15 points and five assists. Johnson had nine points and 15 rebounds.

DeVaux, who was recognized prior to the game as a part of Senior Day Festivities, led the Leopards with 15 points. Junior Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) had 13 points, three assists, and three steals, while freshman Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.) added 12 points (on 5-for-7 shooting) with 11 rebounds and three assists.
