Men's Lacrosse Opens Season With 8-6 Win

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) netted a hat trick and an assist for four points to lead Wentworth to an 8-6 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Kipp collected two of his tallies in the final frame for the visiting Leopards (1-0), as he snapped a 5-5 tie with 11:29 remaining that started a three goal run for Wentworth.  Junior Greg Ordway (Freeport, Maine) extended the Leopard lead to 7-5 midway through the fourth quarter, and Kipp completed his hat trick just 38 seconds later to add an insurance marker for the visitors.  Junior Dan Langley (Abington, Mass.) closed the host Buccaneers' (1-2) deficit back to two goals with 5:45 to play in the contest, but Wentworth was able to control the clock for most of the final three minutes of play to present first-year Head Coach Dan Russo with his first collegiate victory in its season opener.

Sophomore Jeff Guilherme (Derry, N.H.) added a pair of goals and an assist for three points in the win for the Leopards, as his second tally of the evening with 3:12 to play in the opening half gave the visitors a 4-3 edge in a see-saw affair that saw six lead changes and five ties.  Ordway finished with two markers for the winners, who also received a goal and an assist from junior Mark Pappas (Worcester, Mass.) to go with single helpers off the sticks of senior Justin Connors (Richboro, Pa.) and sophomore Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.).

Langley was one of three players to net two goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) collected a pair of tallies and added an assist for three points while senior Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) also accounted for two markers.  Freshman Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) added a pair of assists for the Buccaneers, who also received a helper off the stick of freshman John Forcier (Medford, Mass.).

Junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) picked up the win in goal for Wentworth with a 14-save effort, while sophomore Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made a career-high 15 stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Leopards outshot the Buccaneers by a 38-34 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts New York Maritime in the Third Annual Maritime Cup clash on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Wentworth travels to Newton, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Lasell in a non-league match that begins at Noon.
