PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded a career-high 13 points, which included a program-record nine assists to pace seven players with multiple points as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team opened the 2019 campaign with a 21-5 win over Anna Maria.
Doner's nine helpers breaks the previous record of seven, which was set by both Jeff Guilherme and Justin Connors in a win over Wheelock on April 25, 2011. Additionally, his 13 points are the second-most in a single game in program history.
The Leopards open the season in the win column for the third straight season while the AMCATS fall to 1-2 on the season.
Joining Doner with multiple points on the afternoon were sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) who had two goals and six assists, senior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) who had four goals, freshmen Nick Gore (Salem, N.H.) and Calvin McKenna (Seattle, Wash.) who each scored three goals, sophomore Steven Russman (Troy, N.Y.), who had a pair of goals and an assist, and senior Matt Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) who found the back of the net twice.
Wentworth scored the first six goals of the game and never looked back, taking a 6-1 lead after one quarter of play. Doner factored into all six goals, scoring twice and assisting on four others.
The second quarter saw the Black & Gold extend their lead to 9-1 on markers from Gore, Coakley, and Doner within the first 6:58 of the frame. After Anna Maria scored two of the next three goals, McKenna scored to begin a 7-0 run, which extended into the third quarter and brought Wentworth's lead to 17-3. Junior Brandon Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) ended the run with a goal with 941 left in the third, however Coakley set up Doner with 7:34 left to make it 18-4 after three quarters.
After Pavoni opened the fourth quarter with an AMCAT goal, Larsen scored twice and Russman added one to round out the scoring.
Freshman Erik Madden (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scooped up five ground balls in the win. Sophomore Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.), freshman Sean Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.), and senior Kilian Ryan (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) each caused a pair of turnovers. At the X, freshman Radu Stancescu (Suffern, N.Y.) was 10-of-14 while sophomore Tom Rockwell (Andover, Mass.) was 9-of-15.
Pavoni finished the game with three goals and an assist while senior Ryan Rockwal (Chicopee, Mass.) had a pair of goals. Junior Kyle Benning (Puyallup, Wash.) scooped up five ground balls.
Sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.) made five saves for Wentworth. Anna Maria sophomore Griffin Moore (Worcester, Mass.) made 11 stops for Anna Maria. Wentworth had a 49-18 shot advantage and a 36-22 edge in ground balls. The Leopards were also successful in 13-of-17 clearing attempts.
