Wentworth Falls to Babson in Season Opener

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior Billy Nickerson (Middleton, Mass.) scored two goals and sophomore Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) added another to lift the Babson College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology in the opening game of the 2010 Babson Fall Classic on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Leopards fell to 0-1.

Babson got on the board just over 10 minutes into the game, as senior back Ben Meyerson (South Nyack, N.Y.) collected a failed clear and chipped a perfect ball over the defense from 35 yards out. Wentworth senior goalie Brian Pearsall (Sanford, Maine) came charging out of net in an attempt to intercept the pass, but Anderson got there first, heading a shot over the keeper and into an open net at 10:14.

Nickerson tacked on a pair of goals in a 10-minute stretch late in the second half, beginning when he received a pass from first-year Mike Fisher (Longmeadow, Mass.) at the top of the box and tucked a shot inside the right post at 74:09. The junior striker then netted his second of the game off a perfect give-and-go with first-year Ben Pasquariello (Danvers, Mass.) at 83:45.

Pearsall finished with five saves in net for Wentworth, while junior keeper Peter Crowley (Lexington, Mass.) did not make a stop in earning his second straight shutout for Babson. The Beavers outshot the Leopards by a count of 19-3 in the contest.

Both teams conclude tournament play tomorrow with the host Beavers playing Eastern Connecticut State at 1:00, while the Leopards take on MIT.
