INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – STATISTICAL LEADERS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wentworth opened the match on .310 hitting as a team and broke a 2-2 tie with an 8-3 run, thanks to two kills from Ryan Love (Gaithersburg, Md.) and an ace apiece from Drew Hesse (Eden, N.Y.) and Ian Carlson (Parker, Colo.). The Leopards kept the five-point gap, 12-7, and built the lead to six points at 18-12, forcing a Scarlet Hawks' timeout after a thunderous kill from Oshman. Wentworth, which registered a 70% sideout percentage the frame, scored the final seven of 12 points, capped by back-to-back swings from McLane and Carlson.
  • Illinois Tech settled into a rhythm in set two, as the frame featured 12 tied scores and two lead changes. Easton Kays capped a 3-0 run for the visitors in the middle of the set ,which put the Scarlet Hawks in front for the 16-15 lead. Freshmen Colin Stockton (Hummelstown, Pa.) and Oshman then denied Kays' attack on the backend of an Oshman kill that stole the lead back for Wentworth for good. Carlson booked five kills in the set to power the Leopards to a 25-22 finish.
  • The Scarlet Hawks forced three tied scores in the final set, two of which occurred in the waning plays of the match following two WIT errors. Midway through the frame, Illinois Tech sparked a 5-2 run, which erased a three-point deficit, as the Scarlet Hawks trailed by just one 15-14 after a block from Grant Couper and Evan Robeck. Both teams battled point-for-point, before Love broke the 24-24 tie with a kill, combined with an Oshman/Stockton block which gave the hosts the non-league sweep.
