BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth softball team recently completed its annual Spring Break to Myrtle Beach, S.C., coming home with a 2-5 record. The two wins for the Leopards doubles the total victory output from the 2011 campaign.
Wentworth opened the season with a split against Wesley, dropping the first game 15-5 and winning the second game, 4-2, before falling to Penn State-New Kensington (10-9) and Juniata (10-1). The Leopards snapped their losing streak with a 10-2 win over Penn State-Berks before concluding the trip with two losses to Penn State-Altoona, 7-3 and 7-1.
Offensively, freshman Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) began her collegiate career in fine fashion, batting .591 (13-for-22) with four doubles, four home runs, nine runs scored, and 12 RBI. She has an on-base percentage of .615 and a slugging percentage of 1.318. Sophomore Kelly Budzik (Fort Plain, N.Y.) is batting .320 with five runs scored, while freshman Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) is batting .318 (7-for-22) with a double, a home run, and eight runs scored. Curran also leads the team with four stolen bases.
In the circle, Budzik is 1-1 with a 2.62 earned run average, with both of her starts being complete games. Freshman Sam Burgner (Dalton, Mass.) has started five games at pitcher, and, despite a 1-4 record, has fanned 23 batters in 29 innings of work.
The Leopards, whose roster consists of 13 freshman and sophomores, open the northern portion of their schedule with a doubleheader against Colleges of the Fenway rival Emmanuel College on Saturday at Noon. The games are at Wentworth's Carr Diamond.
