BOSTON, Mass. – After posting its most successful season since 2010, Wentworth Institute of Technology head softball coach Alexandra Campione has announced her resignation effective immediately. The resignation was accepted by Director of Athletics Cheryl Aaron.
"These past three years have been nothing short of incredible. I have enjoyed every minute as a member of the Wentworth Community and of the Wentworth Athletic Department," said Campione. "I feel so fortunate to have played a part in this program's success and was privileged to coach such hard working and committed student- athletes. I wish this program nothing but success in the years to come."
Under Campione's reign, the 2018 campaign saw the Leopards post 11 wins overall, including three victories against Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponents. The three league victories were the most since the 2010 season, including splitting a CCC doubleheader at Gordon on April 13 to break a nine-year drought against the Fighting Scots. Wentworth nearly doubled its offensive performances in major statistical categories from last season, including runs, hits, stolen bases, and runs batted in.
In addition to the numbers on the field, Wentworth earned its first CCC softball weekly award since 2012 on March 26. At the conclusion of the season, the Leopards were awarded as the Senior-Scholar Athlete recipient as just the third Wentworth softball player to receive the award since conference records dating back to 1995.
Campione took over as the sixth coach in program history in the fall of 2015, and made a noticeable impact on the team immediately. In her first season, she improved the team in several statistical categories while equaling the output of victories from 2015. In her three seasons with the program, she coached the team to 19 victories, more than the previous three seasons combined. The future is bright for the Leopards, with a talented and geographical diverse class set to attend Wentworth this fall.
"I can speak for the entire department in thanking Alex for her hard work and commitment to the softball program at Wentworth the last three years," said Aaron. "I know she has left the program in a better place than when she started and we all wish her the best of luck in the future."
A search for Campione's replacement will begin shortly.
