BOSTON, Mass. – Wentworth Institute of Technology Director of Athletics Cheryl Aaron is pleased to announce the hire of Erica Castro as Head Softball Coach, which is effective immediately.
"I am very happy to welcome Erica to the Wentworth community. Erica has gained incredible experience in her playing and coaching career at Roger Williams that will help to further build and lead our program in the Commonwealth Coast Conference," said Aaron. "But more importantly, she brings a terrific understanding and appreciation for what it means to be a Division III student-athlete."
Castro spent the past six seasons as an assistant softball coach for Roger Williams University, specializing in hitting and outfielder defense. Castro, also a former standout infielder and two-time co-captain for the Hawks, helped coach her Alma Mater to its fourth 20-win season in five years in 2017.
"I am very excited to become a part of the Wentworth Leopard family. I can tell Wentworth is a special place and its values align with my own," said Castro. "I am grateful to Cheryl Aaron, and the entire search committee for giving me the opportunity to work with this great group of student-athletes. I look forward to taking Wentworth softball to the next level on and off the field. It is an absolute honor to be able to continue to give back to the game that I am forever indebted to."
A four-time Commonwealth Coast Conference honoree, Castro started in all 170 games played for the Hawks and finished with a .302 batting average with 74 runs batted in and 173 hits. Defensively, Castro turned 22 double plays, a program-best for the Hawks, and finished with 343 career assists, which ranks her second all-time within the program. Castro still remains in the top-10 all-time record list in hits, doubles, total bases, runs batted in, and at bats.
A Medford, N.Y. native, Castro graduated from Roger Williams in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee during her undergraduate career. In 2017, Castro completed her Master's Degree in Sports Leadership from Northeastern University.
