Women's Tennis Earns First Win of 2012 Season

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2012 campaign as the Leopards swept Lesley, 9-0, in a non-conference match played at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center. With the win Wentworth evens its record to 1-1 while the Lynx dropped their season opener.

After Wentworth earned a point at number three doubles by default, Juniors Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) and Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) earned a win at number two doubles with an 8-0 win over senior Hannah Phelan (Seattle, Wash.) and junior Jillian Clarke (Old Tappan, N.J.). Sophomores Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead after doubles play with an 8-1 win over senior Katie Side (Miller Place, N.Y.) and senior Brenna Donovan (Hingham, Mass.) at number one.

The Leopards earned a point at number six singles and proceeded to drop just eight games through the remaining five flights. Ofer and Massaro defeated Phalen and Clarke, respectively, at numbers three and four in straight sets while Corcoran defeated Side at number one (6-2, 6-1), Hegner defeated Donovan at number two (6-0, 6-4), and sophomore Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I.) defeated Phelps (6-0, 6-1) at number five.

Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday with a home match against Gordon at Noon. Lesley hosts Mount Ida on Wednesday, September 12.
