SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Commonwealth Coast Conference announced the 2015-16 Men's Basketball All-Conference and major award winners Tuesday afternoon. Student-athletes from eight of the 10 CCC men's basketball teams were named All-CCC honorees.
Nichols senior Irving Eggleston (East Lyme, Conn.) was named both the conference's player of the year and defensive player of the year. Gordon's Garrisson Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) earned the title of rookie of the year as the CCC's top newcomer. Wentworth's Kyle Romich (Groton, Mass.) was recognized as the league's senior scholar-athlete, while his coach Arlen Galloway took home the 2015-16 CCC Coach of the Year. Gordon was selected as the winner of the team sportsmanship award.
Voting for the All-CCC teams and each of the major awards was conducted by the conference's 10 men's basketball head coaches following the conclusion of the regular season.
Eastern Nazarene's Jaylen Owens (Johns Creek, Ga.), Endicott's Kamahl Walker (Worcester, Mass.), Eggleston and his Nichols teammate Gustave Koumare (Harlem, N.Y.), Wentworth's Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) and Romich make up the 2015-16 All-CCC First Team.
The Second Team is comprised of Endicott teammates Max Matroni (West Warwick, R.I.) and Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.), Duvivier, Nichols's Marcos Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.), Salve Regina's Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.), and University of New England's Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass.).
Finally, Lequan Gomes (Fairfield, Calif.) and Eric Lynch (Alpharetta, Ga.) from Eastern Nazarene, Eric Demers (West Wareham, Mass.) and Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.) from Gordon, Christian Horton (Rutland, Mass.) from Nichols, and Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) from Roger Williams make up the All-CCC Third Team.
Romich has started all 25 games for the Leopards and is averaging 18.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 43.2 percent from the floor, which includes 40.8 percent from behind the three-point arc. Scoring 20 or more points on nine occasions, he posted career highs of 32 points in a 75-72 win at Endicott on Feb. 16, grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds in an 83-72 win over Emmanuel on Nov. 14, and had a career-high four steals in a 64-62 loss to Regis on Nov. 14. Romich, who was named to the All-Tournament Team at both the Coaches vs. Cancer Greater Boston Shootout and the Coaches vs. Cancer Greater Boston Shootout, has also recorded four double-doubles thus far and his 450 points are the ninth-highest in a single season in program history.
On the academic side Romich is a Business Management major who carries a 3.865 grade point average. He was recently named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Men's Basketball Team; the lone senior in the CCC to earn this honor.
Since transferring from Saint Anselm, Romich has appeared in 43 contests and for his career is averaging 11.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game and has connected on 65 career three pointers.
Ganley has started all 25 of the Leopards' games and leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 47.8 percent from the floor. He established a single-game program record with 39 points in an 81-72 win over Gordon on Jan. 19 and has scored 20 or more points in nine games thus far. On Feb. 16, he drained the game-winning shot to give Wentworth a 75-72, overtime win at Endicott and he had a career-best five assists in an 85-59 win over Roger Williams on Feb. 20 which locked up the number two seed for the Black & Gold. His 454 points thus far are the seventh-highest in a single season in program history.
Playing in 46 career games (25 starts), Ganley has averaged 12.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the floor.
In his third season on the Wentworth sidelines, Galloway has directed the Leopards to their second straight .500 or better record after posting a 15-10 record thus far, which includes a program-best 13 wins in league play and the squad's first second-place finish since 2011. In the previous two campaigns, he led Wentworth to at least the semifinal round of the CCC Tournament and a season ago the Black & Gold earned a trip to the CCC title game for the first time since 2011. Tomorrow night will mark the second straight season Wentworth has begun the postseason with a home game. Galloway has a 41-39 record in his three seasons with the Leopards.
Wentworth will look to extend its streak of semifinal appearances to three tomorrow night when the Leopards host seventh-seeded University of New England.
