Men's Basketball Runs Win Streak to Four

MILTON, Mass. – Sophomore Kevin Fernandez (Lawrence, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team (10-3, 3-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference) cruised to its fourth straight win with a 66-49 triumph over Curry (4-8, 0-3) in a CCC match-up Tuesday evening.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth used a 14-2 run to snap an early tie and take a 16-4 lead with 13:00 remaining, thanks to a layup from freshman Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.). After a Curry basket from sophomore Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.), the Leopards went on a 12-0 run, capped off by a junior Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.) dunk with 5:32 left.
  • The Black & Gold took a 26-point lead after juniors Gavin Keough (Dunstable, Mass.) and Tyler Lennon (Atkinson, N.H.) drained back to-back threes and Wentworth led, 34-10, at the half. Through the first 20 minutes, the Leopards held the Colonels to 14.8 percent shooting, which included the hosts going 0-for-11 from behind the arc.
  • Fernandez opened the second half with a three to give the visitors their largest lead of the night (27) and the Leopards' lead remained above 20 for the majority of the half, including when Carrier matched the largest lead of the contest with a dunk.
  • Curry used a 15-5 run to whittle the lead to 17 with 1:27 remaining as Thorpe-Johnson had seven points during the stretch.
  • Wentworth held the Colonels to 30.6 shooting for the game and held a 42-32 advantage on the glass. The Leopards converted 18 Curry turnovers into 21 points and had a 30-5 advantage in bench scoring.
  • In addition to Fernandez, Schaake came off the bench to score 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting and grab six rebounds. Carrier finished with nine points and nine rebounds in the win.
  • Senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wisc.) led the Colonels with 15 points while Thorpe-Johnson added 14.

OF NOTE:

  • Tonight's win marked sixth time in seven seasons under head coach Arlen Galloway and the 14th time in the last 15 seasons the Leopards have eclipsed the 10-win mark.
  • The Leopards' four-game win streak is the longest of the season, surpassing the previous mark of three, set twice this season.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight marked the 61st all-time meeting between the two programs. Wentworth won its 11th straight series meeting to take a 37-24 all-time lead.
