BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Seric Kapp (Scheafferstown, Pa.) scored the game's lone goal and classmate Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) earned his second career shutout with a 28-save performance as the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Curry in ECAC Northeast action at Walter Brown Arena.
The host Leopards, who won their first 1-0 contest since edging Curry in overitme in the 2012 ECAC Northeast title game - a game where Peck recorded first career shutout, had an early chance when sophomore Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.) hit a shot that rung off the crossbar just 3:45 into the game.
Kapp recorded his first marker of the season at the 14:24 mark when sophomore Dan Szerlip (Newton, Mass.) broke up a play at center ice and sent a pass to Kapp, who skated in and took a shot the was saved by junior Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.). The rebound came out to Kapp, who poked it home to the right side. Wentworth held an 8-6 edge in shots after 20 minutes.
While the second period saw no scoring, both teams had chances and the shots were even at 10 apiece.
Freshman Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ont.) made a bid with 10:52 left, but Peck made a diving stop to keep the Leopards on top.
With 55 seconds left the Colonels pulled Mohney for an extra attacker, however could not get a shot attempt. The extra attacker was negated when a late penalty put the Leopards on the power play. Curry held a 12-10 edge in shots for the third period.
Mohney made 27 saves for Curry, while both teams finished the game with 28 shots. Wentworth was 0-for-3 on the power play while the Colonels were 0-for-2.
With the win Wentworth improves to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in league play. Curry dropped its second straight to fall to 2-5 (1-4). The Leopards are at Wesleyan on Saturday, while the Colonels are idle until December 4 when they host UMass Dartmouth.
