BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Andrew Yarber's (Livonia, Mich.) game-tying goal with 13 seconds left in regulation completed a three goal comeback, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team tied Assumption College 3-3, at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday. With the tie, Wentworth is now 4-10-2 on the season, while Assumption stands at 3-10-2.
The Greyhounds got the lone goal in the first period when Joe Arcieri netted a power-play goal at 14:25. Assumption added to its lead at 8:59 of the middle stanza on a goal from Alex Erban and took a 3-0 lead when Paul Amarone scored at 14:25.
Wentworth cut the lead to 3-1 at the 15:35 mark when Lawton McCraken (Colborne, Ont.) blasted his fifth goal of the season from the blue line to get the Leopards on the board.
As time was running out in the second, Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) drove to the net and had his initial attempt denied, but Devin Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) was there to collect the rebound and net his third goal of the season cutting Assumption's lead to 3-2 after two periods of play.
With the score still 3-2 in the waning moments of the third, Wentworth pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker with 48 seconds to play. After a battle out front for a loose puck, Yarber emerged from the scrum with possession of the puck, and buried a close range shot, sending the game into overtime
.
The Black & Gold started overtime down a man after committing a penalty with no time left in regulation, and committed another penalty less than a minute into the five-minute extra session. The Leopards managed to kill off the five on three disadvantage, and ultimately outshot the Greyhounds 4-2 in the period.
In goal, Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) and Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) combined to make 18 saves for the Leopards, with Miller turning aside the game's first 11 shots and Peck making the final seven. Smith led the offensive charge, tallying a goal and an assist on the night and Wentworth outshot Assumption by a 61-21 margin.
Assumption netminder Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass.) withstood the 61-shot onslaught, stopping 58 shots. Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass.) netted a goal and dished out an assist for the Greyhound offense.
Wentworth returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 against ECAC Northeast foe Becker College, while Assumption hosts Nichols College Jan. 19 at 4:35 p.m.
