MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Junior Jordan Bourgonje (Spruce Grove, Alta.) netted a pair of goals to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team to a 5-3 win over Becker in ECAC Northeast play at the New England Sports Center.
With the win the Leopards improve to 10-11-2 overall and 8-4 in league play. The Hawks fall to 2-16-3 (1-7-3) with their second straight defeat.
Bourgonje put the Black & Gold on the board at 14:52 of the first period when he received a centering pass in front from junior Curtis Heinz (Grand Rapids, Mich.). However, the Hawks evened the score 1:01 later when freshman Bryan Parsons (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored, with assists from freshmen Nicholas McKee (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Conner Allison (Hillsboro, Ore.).
The Leopards tallied three times in the second period, taking the lead for good on a junior Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) marker at 3:46. Junior Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) scored from freshman Patrick Kearns (Brick, N.J.) and Domsodi at 11:30 before Bourgonje picked up a loose puck in front of the net and scored his second of the day at the 16:00 mark. With 10 seconds left in the period the Hawks cut the lead to 4-2 on a sophomore Tyler Auricchio (Henderson, Nev.) goal, which was set up by Mckee.
At 9:30 of the third period, Leopard sophomore Stephen McManus (Westwood, Mass.) received a pass from classmate Dan Szerlip (Newton, Mass.) to make it a 5-2 game. It remained a three-goal game until the 19:58 mark when Becker freshman Kyle Godfrey (Geneva, Ill.) scored a power play goal to make the final score 5-3.
Sophomore Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) picked up the win, making 21 saves. Sophomore Greg Hussey (Medford, Mass.) turned aside 47 shots for the Hawks, who were outshot by a 52-24 margin.
Wentworth travels to Curry on Thursday night in hopes of wrapping up a first-round bye in the upcoming ECAC Northeast Tournament. Becker travels to Suffolk on Wednesday night.
