MILTON, Mass. - Junior Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.) out-dueled senior Caylee Johanson (Windsor, Conn.) in the nightcap of a doubleheader, as Curry College swept visiting Wentowrth, 9-3 and 2-1, in softball action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improved to 13-12 overall and 8-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC), while the Leopards fell to 10-15 overall and 3-9 in the TCCC.
In Game 1, Curry plated three runs in three different innings (1st,
3rd, 5th). A two-run double by Peters highlighted the
first-inning rally, and a two-run double by sophomore Stacey
Norton (Alfred, Maine) was the key hit in the fifth. Wentworth got
a single run in the first on an RBI infield hit by junior Bridget
Souza (Medford, Mass.). Four innings later, junior Lizz Harvey
(McConnellsburg, Pa.) and Souza launched back-to-back solo home
runs that cut the hosts' lead to 6-3. But sophomore Jillian
Nemcovich (Franklin, N.H.) came on in relief of junior starter
Janelle Mayo (Worcester, Mass.) and shut down the Leopards over the
final two innings.
Mayo earned the win, improving to 7-3 on the season. Sophomore Michele
Harrington (New Paltz, N.Y.) absorbed the loss, moving her
record to 0-1.
In Game 2, a pitcher's duel resulted in a scoreless game
entering the sixth inning. Wentworth then took a 1-0 lead on a
run-scoring double by senior Nicole
Ferreira (Framingham, Mass.). In the bottom of the 7th, Curry
scored the tying run on an error and the winning run on a
bases-loaded walk to freshman Marissa Strangie (Rowley, Mass.) to
complete the sweep. Peters (4-7) tossed a complete-game,
seven-hitter, allowing one run and no walks while striking out six.
Johanson (9-13) surrendered eight hits, three walks, and one
earned run, while fanning six over 6 1/3 innings.
Wentworth takes to the field on Sunday, traveling to Western New
England College for a noon doubleheader. Curry resumes play on
Tuesday, hosting Endicott in a 3:00 p.m. twin bill.
