Softball Ties Lasell in Non-Conference Action

AUBURNDALE, Mass. – In a game that couldn't see extra innings, the Lasell Lasers (24-14-1) hosted the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (24-8-1) Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The game ended in a 4-4 tie following a back-and-forth battle that featured two lead changes before the Lasers tied things up in the fifth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards gained a 1-0 edge in the first inning as freshman Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.) got on base on an error while graduate student Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) ran home a score for the visitors on the play.
  • The hosts responded in the latter portion of the inning as freshman Abigail Fortin (North Smithfield, R.I.) scored on a wild pitch just before a triple from junior Katie Hopkins (Garden City Park, N.Y.) brought home another score for the Lasers, giving themselves a 2-1 edge.
  • In the fifth inning with two runners on base, graduate student Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) sent a single to the outfield and made it to third on an error, bringing in runs from senior Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) and sophomore Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.), giving Wentworth a 3-2 lead.
  • Later in the inning, Igawa reached base on an error as Beverly scored on the same play, extending the Leopards' lead to 4-2.
  • Lasell answered in the later portion of the inning as a sacrifice fly brought home another score by Fortin. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, a fielder's choice brought Lasell's runner on base while bringing home a score by junior Ally Kirck (Hamden, Conn.), knotting the score at four apiece.
  • Senior Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) led the Leopards in the circle, striking out five batters across four innings. Offensively, Pina led the bats, going 3-4, while Beverly notched 2 RBI going 1-4.
