Hawks Down Leopards in Overtime

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Noelle Marston's (Pembroke, Mass.) second goal of the game, coming with 3:59 remaining in overtime, lifted Roger Williams to a 3-2 victory over Wentworth in The Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams played at Sweeney Field.

The visiting Hawks jumped out in from early when sophomore midfielder Alexa Maher (Hopewell, N.J.) found an open Marston, who tallied her first goal of the season at the 4:19 mark.  That goal would be the lone one of the first half as Roger Williams held a 9-6 shot advantage, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.

Roger Williams increased its lead to 2-0 at 59:00 when Marston fed a pass to sophomore forward Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.), who notched her second marker of the season.

The Leopards' comeback began when junior forward Sarah Norkiewicz (Dracut, Mass.) would assist on freshman forward Elizabeth Somma's (Windham, Maine) first collegiate goal, which she buried to the top right from 12 yards out.

In the 87th minute, Wentworth would get the equalizer when Somma took a corner kick from the left corner which was served inside the box.  A battle for the ball ensued with freshman midfielder Taryn Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) finally gaining control and finding the back of the net at the 86:36 mark.

Maher would set up the game-winning goal, as she took a shot that was saved by Leopard sophomore keeper Katherine Matthews (Northborough, Mass.) and deflected off the end line.  Maher served a corner kick that resulted in a shot by senior forward Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.) and saved by Matthews.  The rebound came out to Marston, who found the back of the net, ending the contest at the 96:01 mark.

Senior Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) made five saves for Roger Williams, while Matthews turned aside seven shots.  The Hawks held a 21-13 shot advantage, including a 5-0 advantage in overtime.

The win improves the Hawks' record to 3-2 (1-0 TCCC) and Roger Williams hosts Brandeis on Thursday.  Wentworth dropped its second straight to stand at 1-4 (0-1 TCCC).  The Leopards are back in action Wednesday night, hosting nationally ranked Western Connecticut.
