NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team ran its unbeaten to streak to five as the Corsairs topped visiting Wentworth, 4-0, in non-conference action at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
After three consecutive overtime contests, senior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, Mass.) netted two goals to lead the Corsairs. Van Ness opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she converted a pass from sophomore forward Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, Mass.). The Corsairs would take the 1-0 lead into the half.
UMass Dartmouth stretched their lead nine minutes into the second half when junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, R.I.) fired a shot from outside the box that Leopards' senior goalkeeper Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) misplayed. The Corsairs would tack on another score 12 minutes later when senior midfielder Vanessa Demelo (Fall River, Mass.) converted a penalty kick for her first goal of the season. Van Ness capped the scoring in the 69th minute when she converted a through ball from Pierce.
The Corsairs outshot the Leopards, 26-6. Gardner made eight saves for Wentworth, while junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass.) made four saves for the Corsairs en route to her fifth shutout of the season.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-1-1 with the victory, while Wentworth dropped to 1-5-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Saturday. The Leopards will visit Curry Saturday.
