MILTON, Mass. – Freshman Valeria Zapata's (Pawtucket, R.I.) goal in the 40th minute of play stood as the game's lone marker and senior Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) made 19 saves as the Wentworth women's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 1-0 win at Curry. With the win the Leopards are now 2-5-1 overall and 1-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play while the Colonels fall to 3-3-1 (1-1)
Zapata notched her team-high fourth tally of the season after she dribbled the ball past two Colonel defenders and went one-on-one with Curry's senior goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.). Zapata saw an empty corner of the net and one-timed it into the back past Hardy for the goal, which snapped a team scoreless streak of 423:37. Both teams battled throughout the rest of the frame but Wentworth was able to keep the one goal lead heading into the break.
Curry stepped up its play in the second half and controlled most of the play. While the Colonels only outshot the Leopards by two in the first 45 minutes of the game, they had 19 in the final half to the Leopards seven. Just 12 of those shots however landed on net and Gardner was solid between the pipes to keep Curry scoreless. Junior Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) had a chance to tie the game with just less than five minutes to play when she had a direct shot in front of the net, but Gardner was there for the stop.
The Colonels outshot the Leopards 29-15 in the loss.
Hardy earned the loss for the Colonels making 10 saves. Gardner made 19 saves in net for Wentworth in their team's first conference win of the season.
The Colonels will host Fitchburg State on Tuesday, September 25 for a 5:30 p.m. kick off. That Same day Wentworth hosts WPI at 7:00 p.m.
