BOSTON, Mass. – Five different players scored goals and senior Beverly Farris (Palmer, Mass.) made five saves in her collegiate debut in net as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team improved to 2-0 with a 5-0 win over Emerson.
After a scoreless first 31:44, the Leopards got all the scoring they would need when sophomore Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) took a shot, which was saved by Emerson senior keeper Allie Altman (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). However, the rebound came out to senior Tori Armishaw (Scarborough, Maine) who notched her second goal in as many games.
Just 4:35 into the second half, Wentworth extended its lead to 2-0 when Weinberger picked up her second helper of the game as she fed classmate Michelle Murphy (West Islip, N.Y.), whose shot from 15 yards out found the top left corner.
The Black & Gold scored a pair of goals in a six-second span to break the game open. First, sophomore Valeria Zapata (Pawtucket, R.I.) and freshman Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) were on a breakaway where Richard slid a pass to Zapata, who upped the lead to 3-0. Moore made it a 4-0 game after Richard created a takeaway and found Moore, who put a shot into the lower right corner.
With 30:03 left in the contest Wentworth was awarded a penalty kick where Weinberger converted for her third marker of the season.
Farris made four of her five saves in the second half while Altman made seven in just over 60 minutes before sophomore Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn.) made a pair of saves in just under 30 minutes of work. Wentworth held a 20-7 advantage in shots and had three of the game's four corners.
Both teams continue non-conference play on Saturday with Wentworth hosting New England College and Emerson (0-2) hosting Gordon.
