HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Huskies threatened with a pair of shots in the early going, but freshman goalkeeper Juliana Heaton (Swansea, Mass.), who made a career-high 11 saves on the night, turned the attempts aside. Heaton made three saves throughout the opening half.
  • Despite Southern Maine receiving most of the opportunities throughout the first half, it was the Leopards who got on the board first. In the 36th minute, junior Madison Wolf (Falmouth, Maine) took the ball down the left sideline. She sent the ball across, where Mckenzie Collins (Seymour, Conn.) pushed it off the inside of her left foot and past the Huskies goalkeeper to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead that they took into the intermission.
  • Picking up where she left off, Heaton made a pair of saves early in the second to hold the lead for the Leopards. The home team looked to add to their lead and got multiple shots on net, but USM's Breanna Atwood kept the Leopards off the board.
  • The score remained the same until late in the second half, when a foul in the box gave Southern Maine a penalty kick attempt. The Huskies Mia Sargent put up a shot that just made it past the right hand of Heaton to tie the game at one apiece.
  • Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final minutes, sending the two squads to sudden death overtime.
  • In the first overtime, USM got three shots off. Heaton was able to keep the visitors from picking up the winning goal, while one Wentworth shot was turned aside as well.
  • The visitors turned up the offensive pressure in the second overtime, getting six shots away in the 10 minute period. They were once again unable to score the game winner, and Wentworth's lone shot attempt in the period was no good as well, sending the match to a 1-1 conclusion.

THE SERIES:

  • Tonight was just the third ever meeting between the two programs, as Wentworth now holds a 2-0-1 series advantage.
