Lasell Holds Off Women's Soccer

NEWTON, Mass. – Despite a fury of chances by the end of the game, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team (0-2) couldn't find the tying tally in the later portion of Sunday's contest, suffering a 2-1 loss to Lasell (1-1) in non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lasers applied the pressure early, nicking two shots on goal that were saved by senior Adrianna Arona (Westfield, Mass.) just under two minutes into play. A third at the 4:55 mark by sophomore Evelyn DiFiore (Las Vegas, Nev.) found the back of net, putting the hosts ahead 1-0 early on.
  • Just over four minutes after a shot by senior Madelyn Seder (Marlborough, Mass.) was stopped, junior Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) tied the game at the 17:38 mark on a goal assisted by sophomore Megan Barilone (Bennington, Vt.), tying the game at one goal apiece.
  • As the first half was winding down, Lasell regained the lead shortly after being awarded a corner kick on a goal by graduate student Grace Rava (Wilton, Conn.) at the 37:42 mark.
  • The Leopards nearly tied the score in the later going, rattling off eight shots, four on goal, in the final 35 minutes of play. However, freshman goalkeeper Lataya Simmons (Cape Coral, Fla.) stopped all four attempts, further helping Lasell hold on for a 2-1 win.
  • Simmons got the win for the Lasers, while Arona made four saves on six shots before freshman Claire Reif (Winter Springs, Fla.) saved the Lasers' only attempt in the final 15:49 to play in her collegiate debut.
