Women's Volleyball Sweeps Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Freshman Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) notched eight kills and 13 digs to lead the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a 3-0 non-league victory over Massachusetts Maritime in a match played Thursday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.

With the win the Leopards improve to 23-4 on the season while the Buccaneers fall to 7-21.

Freshman Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) added seven kills for the visiting Leopards, who also received six kills and a pair of digs from senior Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.). Junior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) chipped in with 19 set assists, five kills and four digs for Wentworth, which also collected 15 set assists from freshman Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.), 10 digs from sophomore Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) and five kills from junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.).

Freshman Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.) recorded seven digs and five kills in the setback for the host Buccaneers (7-21), who also receive nine digs and four kills from senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.).  Sophomore Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) added three kills, four digs and a pair of service aces for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 13 set assists and six digs from freshman Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.), 13 digs from freshman Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) and a pair of kills from senior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.).

After the hosts scored the first point of the match, Wentworth went on a 7-1 run to take the lead for good at 7-2. The Leopards extended their lead to 15-8 on a Rogoz kill before Mass. Maritime scored the next two points. The spurt would be short-lived as the Leopards closed out the set on a 10-1 run to win, 25-11. Freshman Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had five kills and seven digs in the set.

Mass. Maritime scored four of the first five points of the second set and would take a 13-9 lead after a service error. Wentworth went on an 8-1 run and took a 17-14 lead after a sophomore Abigail Ahern (Barrington, N.H.) ace. The Buccaneers called a timeout and scored the next two points, however an 8-1 run – with freshman Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) serving six points – closed out the set at 25-17. Rogoz had three kills during the run. Rogoz had four kills and two blocks in the set.

Wentworth closed out the set with a 25-12 win in the third set. The Leopards snapped a 5-5 tie with a 10-0 run, thanks in part to Tomastik serving nine straight points in which she recorded a pair of aces.

The Leopards close out the regular season on Saturday with a home match against Endicott.
