Men's Basketball Picks Up First Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Derek Mayo (Casco, Maine) had a game-high 17 points while senior Colin Johnson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) added 16 points as the Wentworth men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 63-51 win at Connecticut College. The win was the first-ever for the Leopards over the Camels in the 12 meetings between the programs.

Connecticut College led by three on two occasions – at 5-2 and 8-5 – thanks to 3-pointers by junior Matt Vadas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) and freshman Bo McKinley (Westport, N.Y.), respectively. The Leopards outscored the Camels, 11-0 over the next 7:13 to take a 16-8 lead with Mayo scoring nine of the Black & Gold's 11 points.

The Camels trailed by six after a freshman Jared Schill (Woodcliff Lakes, N.J.) basket, however a 14-2 run – capped off by one of two free throws from Johnson gave Wentworth a 30-12 lead with just under a minute left in the first half. Wentworth led, 31-15 at the break.

Wentworth saw its lead cut to as few as nine with 13:08 left, but an 8-1 spurt pushed the lead back to 16 with 11:22 remaining. Connecticut College would get as close as eight after a pair of Schill free throws with 2:33 left and after a Vadas basket with 1:58 left but six of eight free throws – including three by Mayo – sealed the win for the Leopards.

Senior Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine) added 10 points, three assists, and three steals in the win while senior Dailon Wilson (Houston, Texas) added nine points and eight rebounds.

Vadas led the Camels with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Wentworth improves to 1-2 overall and is at Wheelock on Monday night. Connecticut College falls to 1-2 and is at Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday.
