Roger Williams Takes Pair From Wentworth

Roger Williams Takes Pair From Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams softball team extended its win streak to four games with a pair of The Commonwealth Coast Conference wins as the Hawks swept Wentworth, 3-2, and 8-3.

The opening game saw the host Leopards score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Sophomore Krysta Cunha (New Bedford, Mass.) scored when junior Jen Giudice (Central Valley, N.Y.) stole second and junior Bridget Souza (Medford, Mass.) had an RBI groundout which would score Giudice.

Roger Williams tied the game in the top of the fourth, thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) and an RBI fielder's choice from Shrewsbury, Mass.).  An inning later Teves belted a ground-rule double to left field, which scored senior Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.), who led off the inning with a walk.

Sophomore Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) improved to 7-2 on the year as she allowed two runs (zero earned) on two hits and struck out seven.  Senior Caylee Johanson (Windsor, Conn.) allowed three runs on three hits and walked six to take the loss.  Teves would drive in two runs for Roger Williams, while Souza had an RBI for Wentworth.

The Hawks scored the top of the first in the nightcap when Teves singled to center, but the Leopards countered with an RBI single off the bat of junior Lizz Harvey (McConnelsburg, Pa.) in the home half of the inning to tie the game.  Wentworth took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when sophomore Michele Harrington (New Paltz, N.Y.) scored on an illegal pitch and the Leopards extended their lead to 3-1 an inning later on an RBI double from Souza.

Roger Williams plated six runs in the fifth inning, thanks to back to back, two-run doubles from Caprice and sophomore Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.), and RBI triple from sophomore Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.), and an RBI single off the bat of senior Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.).  The Hawks added a run in the sixth on a ground-rule double from freshman Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.).

Sophomore Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) picked up the win (1-3) in relief, by pitching a scoreless fourth.  Marcin started, pitched three innings, and was brought back in for the final two innings.  Broughton struck out one batter, while Marcin allowed three runs of four hits and struck out five. Johanson was tagged with the loss as she allowed eight runs on 11 hits.

Offensively for the Hawks, four players had two hits, including Caprice and Castro, who also drove in two runs.  Souza and Harvey each had an RBI for the Leopards.

Roger Williams improves to 12-10 overall and 4-4 in TCCC play.  The Hawks host Gordon on Tuesday.  Wentworth falls to 6-11 (3-5) and hosts Eastern Nazarene on Monday.
