SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College
women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in a 1:47 span in the
second half for a 2-1 victory over visiting Wentworth Institute of
Technology Saturday afternoon (Oct. 10).
This was the fourth consecutive victory for the Golden Bears who
evened their record at 6-6 while climbing to 5-3 in The
Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
The Leopards took a 1-0 lead when sophomore midfielder Lucy
Brown (Plainville, CT) knocked in a shot with an assist
from junior midfielder Megan
Rogoff (Uncasville, CT) in the 12th minute.
WNEC came back after the break tying the match on an unassisted
goal by sophomore midfielder Andrea Almeida (Newington,
CT) at the 66:03 mark. It was her first goal of the
season. Junior forward Heather Mortell (Webster,
MA) earned the assist.
Mortell then delivered the game-winner following a great pass from
junior defender Corrine Alexinas (Massapequa Park, NY) at
67:50.
Sophomore Morgan Vogt (Henniker, NH) didn't score any
points, but turned in a solid performance from her midfield
position.
Wentworth had one final chance in the final seconds, but a shot by
junior forward Sarah
Norkiewicz (Dracut, MA) just missed to the left. Sophomore
goalkeeper Katherine
Matthews (Northborough, MA) compiled 10 saves in a solid
performance.
WIT falls to 3-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
Western New England College held a 20-12 advantage in shots.
Wentworth took an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
